My lifestyle provides the setting:
If I examine my life of the past few years it is comprised of the following
Casual (80%)
Formal (20%)
This mix of activities drives what I wear. I can love beautiful, elegant noble metal complicated watches all I want, but I will wear them rarely.
A desire to wear them with regularity:
Owning watches that I never or rarely wear because I thought they were beautiful or horologically interesting and I “had to own it” becomes quite odd over time. They become objects of emotional interest, but of no practical use (like the boxes in your attic that you moved with you that you never open). I have come to the conclusion that I don’t want to own a watch that I do not wear at least a month a year (not continuous, but cumulative).
Ease of set-up and storage:
Being an engineer, I love complicated watches (chronographs, annual calendars, perpetual calendars etc) but wearing some of these in rotation can be troublesome to set up and my safety deposit box has no winder (J). Simpler watches with a simple date or no date are much easier to set up in a rotation.
Ongoing maintenance costs:
I have purchased a few watches per year each year so maintenance cycles can tend to sink up creating large out-of-pocket costs. The more complicated the watch, the higher the costs. This has moved me to separate purchases more over time in a collection and toward simpler watches where service costs are more manageable.
My income and life stage:
I am in my early 50s still and income to support this hobby is of little concern. But 10 or more from now, I am not sure that a $1,500-$2,000 maintenance bill for servicing will be as welcome. At my age, there could be 5 or more service cycles ahead on my watches (interesting to think about one’s life in terms of maintenance cycles (J).
Scratching the itch:
Having a small, 4 or 5 watch collection needs to be thought about realistically. I will be watching the upcoming watch shows for “what’s new” and will never have the discipline to totally ignore them. So I was thinking about having 4 core watches and to leave one slot open to buy and sell to satisfy the “itch” to some degree.
I appreciate all of you sharing your thoughts (particularly those of you with very large collections) for an interesting discussion.
Best,
Bob
