I think the horological experience reached its peak in the 2010s..
I blame soc med for killing a lot of the original excitement.
Before that platform took off and along with it much of the unadulterated experience of enjoying all thing’s horological, there was still an element of insider baseball to the enjoyment granted there was already a proliferation of websites and forums that catered to our hobby. But that was ok. One still had to love watches to stumble upon places like ours. Now it’s force fed through some online drip.
Soc med switched the lights on when all we wanted was to enjoy these things under cover complete with flashlights 🙂
At least that’s how it has evolved for me. It might come off as a bit snobbish but it’s really more like little boys with secrets and stories having fun in some tree house in the dead of night.
I don’t want everything to be democratized 😁

The reasons for why it is the way it is, is in my mind complex and hard to pin down. The mechanical watch is not an item of purpose anymore. It is an item of luxury. The correct time (often more correct than a mechanical watch gives) is easily accessible ...

Well, sad, my dear friend. The passion, and sometimes the obsession is in our hearts. Like anything else we can only hope that in the future things get better but we’ve all been disappointed before.
