Horological Meandering

I believe we are deep in the new era of luxury while we guys are mentally stuck in the previous one.

These are just incomplete quick thoughts typed on the phone but I'll try.

1 Not so long ago the game of luxury products was - hire best talent in design and manufacturing, give the team best materials, make top-quality product and sell it to best retailers at half of MSRP. The product was expensive and, although everyone wanted it because of design/quality, not many had means to afford it. Being able to afford and use the product gave the feeling of luxury. Brand was important but was not an overwhelming characteristic.

2 New current era of luxury has the game changed.

Flying around the world is easy. There are many people with money globally who

a) want to feel special because they are able to source a certain brand or model. The importance of best materials and handcraft has significantly diminished, while brand name and model recognition are now the key.

Or

b) some people with money have lost or never had interest in wearable/drivable/consumable/etc luxury. Instead, they want to get luxury/special emotions from being able to travel/visit certain hard to get places or events, rub shoulders with certain hard to reach people, etc. Luxury industry is trying to appeal to them creating the feeling of unobtainable. Sort of saying - yes, many can afford it and would dream to buy it but only you and few others can.
PS this can be done directly - 3rd party retailers are not needed anymore, but brand lounges are. Modern boutiques where nothing is available for sale are just those brand lounges in the process of trial and preparing for transformation.

So where does the industry now stand IMHO
FOR SELLERS
- the focus on product is gone and replaced by the focus on what buyers FEEL when buying the brand.

FOR BUYERS
- for experienced collectors (often those stuck in the previous era of luxury) new models will be less and less different from previous ones (just new color, etc), but this negative will be compensated by positive emotions from existing purchase records allowing to buy what others cannot.
- for inexperienced- either buy what you can to build the record, or buy what you really like at a premium on secondary market (supporting the prices which is also important for the brand) or just skip this game, playing smartwatches, new electronics, cars, art, fancier hotels, travelling Polinesia, Kamchatka, North/South poles, etc etc.

Where I personally stand as a watch collector? I am into watches for over 20y and continue growing a small collection of yesterday's superstars - some of the top watches produced 15-30 years ago by both larger brands and independents. Specifically so far from DB, GP, ALS, PSM, Omega, Breguet and UN.
