to see them in operation is very satisfying. I suspect this has to do with the fact we are also analog creatures. I don't believe this will disappear.
Clocks are on the decline because it's really difficult to service them, whether in terms of finding qualified clockmakers or the logistics of transporting a big piece of furniture. You need a support network to make it not burdensome for people to remain interested in the hobby.
Pocket watches are in decline also for the size reason, because wristwatches are available as a strong substitute. You also don't need a waist coat to wear them, just strap it on and you are good to go. Again the convenience factor.
I really cannot imagine imagine any mechanical item that can supplant wristwatch's importance, or at least it hasn't been invented yet.
