I don't know the answer but here's some reasons why Mechanical/Automatic watches are very relevant today
Nov 14, 2019,15:28 PM
1. They are Green technology. No batteries to replace (good for the environment especially landfills and our water resources). No external energy required except for the action of your wrist or the winding action of your fingers so no extra energy infrastructure (think Tesla Super Charging or gasoline/petrol stations) required to support and keep them running (not counting maintenance of course).
2. They encourage healthy living at least tangentially. You need to be relatively active (your watch arm anyway) to keep an automatic watch wound and you need to get off your butt and wind a hand-wound watch every day or so. So wearers become mindful to stay active (at least just) enough to keep their watches running (no pun intended).
3. They are still useful or fulfill a useful purpose. People still need to know the time, right?
4. They are light weight. A watch on the wrist is still much more convenient and compact than the smart phones that keep getting larger and larger and require either a large pocket or even its own bag to carry around.
5. They really do look good on your wrist. Imagine a photo of a naked wrist. Pretty boring. Now image that photo of a wrist with a vintage Rolex GMT-Master 6542 strapped on it. That same photograph has just become 1 billion times (estimate-only) more interesting.
And I forgot to add
6. After the next mega solar flare or EMP blast renders all electronics useless, mechanical watches will still be running.
