Sometimes our enthusiam blinds us...

This subject matter is worth musing, even if it has been discussed time and time again. Let us all check-in with ourselves about how we spend time and resources.
Comparing wristwatches to grandfather clocks is not nearly as appropriate as comparing wristwatches to pocket watches. I can't help but to think that wristwatches will become a very very niche collector's world, just as the way the pocket watch has gone. Pulling out a pocket watch, to check the time, isn't all that different from pulling your phone to check the time. There is no doubt that the pocket watches are beautiful, contain amazing complications, and can last centuries- just as wristwatches. So why think wristwatches are fundamentally different? You could propose, "well I can have my smart phone in my pocket AND have space on my wrist for a mechanical watch, for style" . Maybe this is one reason the pocket watch has seen its apparent demise (and non reprise!). Still, from all the previous posts it appears there is a slow dwindling
of interest in yet another archaic material possession. History does have its patterns. There will be small peaks of fadish interest in the future, witness Polaroid cameras. Combustion-engine cars will go the same way.
Also, given the ever-increasing supply, met with decreasing demand, suggests the pre-owned prices will eventually fall. These are not landfill objects.
The only thing I can predict with greater certainty is that service costs will continue to rise, well beyond inflation.
And I will continue to enjoy a gorgeous mechanical device on my wrist.
And I will influence my 17-month old daughter.
