. . . from grade school:
Teacher to class: Is there a Fourth of July in France?
Young Dr No: Umm, the French celebrate Bastille Day, don't they?
Teacher: Well, what day do you suppose is on their calendar between July third and fifth?
A valuable lesson in listening that left its mark on young Dr No.
Years later, an especially dim co-worker was irritating our boss to no end.
The pithy jewel from grade school suddenly came to mind.
"Hey, Maria - is there a Fourth of July in France?", smirked I.
Sensing a trick question, she slowly drawled, "Umm . . . yes, there is."
I was astonished. Boss was, too.
"Good going, Maria!", our boss exclaimed. "How did you know the right answer?"
Pause.
"Ummm . . . doesn't the whole world celebrate the Fourth of July?"
