It's a bold piece - but does it have a global audience?
I was pretty surprised that the Black Panther watch auction winner was based in China. I don't recall Black Panther being that popular or successful in the China box office, so do you think this model will be interesting for collectors in China or anywhere in Asia for that matter? I also don't see a ton of fanfare in Europe for the Avengers or Black Panther for that matter, so it was a surprise to also see the second highest bid come from Germany. I don't believe again the movie or movie series doing that well in the German box office.
This perhaps is what is perhaps more deliberate to me of the choice of the Avengers series which is incredibly popular in the US - maybe its a way to primarily go after the US fanbase only? Perhaps the same US fanbase that goes after the RM editions and the Jacob editions and the other outrageous pieces.
Anyway, as you said, time will tell, but I believe there are definitely more fans, and those who are in Hollywood, Professional Athletes, and many other areas who would line up for this piece instead of the "standard issue" Rm regular editions and highly inflated other IG brands out there.
Anyway, hope you at least enjoyed the event! I can see from the faces in your photo there is a collective shock in their expressions. At least you can enjoy even more your holy AP collection in the meantime

There's a type of instinct in watch collectors/fans that have developed a taste over time, If you have to "digest" it and "make" yourself like it that requires more than a week or so, probably something's not right

But too much appeal and relevance to rappers and hiphop over time may turn off other audiences. AP will definitely gain some new fans (as well as off-put some existing ones) with peices like this

Many auctions are won by Chinese buyers ;) There's a certain level of irrationality in the market
when it comes to luxury/art and more outliers due to population, but the feedback in general from the Chinese watch circle (me being a part of it) is a lot of head scratching.
