Yes but

Baron- I do understand your argument and actually I think I also understood Bills point. I think he is right for many watches.

Yes to be patient and do your homework often pays dividends perhaps more so than blindly overpaying. But assuming that collectors who bid
at auction have done their home work, when it comes to the watches I am after - you pay a high premium. And rightly so.

I only believe in collecting Iconic watches and the best models available. Life is to short and money to hard to come by (especially today)
in order to just collect mediocre things. So I am talking about a 5512 in perfect condition, CR & PCG with all papers, box. A 6536 is all orgiinal condition is a trophy asset.
So is a early 1675 pointed CG, chapter ring dial with all papers. A Blancpain Fifthy fathoms explorer dial with papers, is a trophy asset, as is a Polaris JLC with original certificate. An original Reverso with laquer dial from 1933- these are all trophy assets! Yes monetary wise they are not in a league of a 6200, or a 6538 but they are none-the-less trophy assets if you buy these watches with receipts, from the original owners family. This is rare. These model represent less than 1% of all watches that people collect. They are Icons that have stood the test of time. I am glad to pay whatever it takes to secure the best example possible.

To get Iconic models in all original condition, you cannot overpay. You try and save and bid on a mediocre example where the dial is damaged, the bezel not original,
the hands probably replaced, you end up losing. This is my experience. I tried to save on a 5513 Military and paid a high price for that mistake.

I once met Lawrence Graff (owner of Graff Diamonds) in MC and I asked him if he felt his business suffering - this was in 2008- during the downturn. He arrogantly told me- 'suffering? My business is still strong! Its because I only believe in buying the best of the best stones. And my clients value that. If you always buy the best of the best you always end up winning'.

I remember I didn't quite understand what he meant. I went home and reflected on how arrogant he seemed.
But with time I learned how right he is. It especially applies to collecting. Buy the best of the best (ofcourse know what the definition of best is- that involves homework) and you cannot lose.
