As for the classification, my opinion is that the neatest criteria is the 4 Digit Ref Number, not the year.
A clear example: The Dayto: The 4 Digit Ref number came till what... 1986, 1987? Before the 5 Digit number came.
No doubt that the 4 Digit Ref Number Dayto is a vintage.
While the transitional Rolex ( Seadweller, Sub, GMT, and Explorer ) are more in the neo vintage category.
The rest is modern, for me, even if they have a tritium dial.
So, to make it clear, as soon as circled indexes appear, we are in the modern era, transitional included.
The only transitional which are neo vintage have a painted dial. 16550 excluded, then.
But you are right, this is the vintage Rolex world, which means a lot of different conceptions.
