Nonetheless, to get back in scope of our realities, I just try to initially gauge a general interest by sharing my basic appreciation for watches…and I watch for reactions like paying attention, asking questions, or even a “that’s cool”, as opposed to zoning out. I do like pointing out the impressive nature as engineering marvels with precision and practical significance. I’ll point out things like the role of Rolex and Omega in popular culture, sports, etc. The Apollo 13 story is a great one while showing a Silver Snoopy. I don’t expect youngsters to gush with excitement from the start, but a reasonable level of attention is something I look for on various occasions. However, a significant tell for me would be when I get to a point of suggesting /offering them to wear a certain age-appropriate piece for a select occasion here and there, and again look for strength of reactions. The ultimate/final tell would be if they come of their own volition to ask to borrow a certain piece for whatever occasion. I think the above assessments are fair, and honestly what I need to see. Again, short of some clear interest, I’m not going to bother with things like a graduation watch, etc. I do like to give gifts and to commemorate certain occasions…and I love the idea of an engraved watch for such purposes, but I’m not going to drop $$$ on a watch that won’t get the appreciation that I would show if in their shoes. That’s just me.☺️
