Bruno I wholeheartedly agree and I’m not sure people really get this (or understand it). It’s fashion, having the “it” item, fear or missing out etc.

These prices, and prices for specific references with more intrinsic horological value too, are driven by said piece being the thing to have.
RM’s entire resale market is driven by this. The 5711, 15202, Daytona etc markets are being driven by this. Journe is also being driven by this (their entire catalogue almost).
I see no difference in the reason for these prices in watches than that I see in the resale market for streetwear like Supreme or Palace or the various sneaker collaborations like Yeezy and Off White. These are simply the things to have and that drives the price, nothing else matters aside from other people want them too.

Mind boggling. I don't understand it at all. ...

If all the grey market dealers currently in possession of a 5711 to sell...

collectively chipped in $500 to buy this at auction, they could now sell their 5711 and kill it. Now of course this did not happen but it’s not a bad idea!

I concur.

Actually the final bid is not what the seller will get

Some guys buy a model in order to make a profit, solicit Instagramers to promote it, raise the odds artificially on Chrono24 by recording very high acquisition prices in the watch collection section thanks to fake accounts to artificially inflate the odds...

There a few hyped pieces and brands that are increasingly inaccessible to collectors.

 By: Horo_Traveler : April 23rd, 2021-05:05
But there is a tremendous selection across brands at great value if one is focused more on horological interest than hype, resale depreciation, etc.

Agree 💯.

World is already crazy 😜 Curious to see how much 5711 green will trade for

A reflection of the utterly mad world we live in.

This is just another example of something making no logic or sense what so ever. The world has gone topsy-tervy as my gran would say. M.

It's all about the looks

finishing and complications no longer matter. Last days I had contact with a few collectors from UAE, Qatar, Saoudi Arabia etc You know what prices people pay for a Journe Elegante ( yes, cool look but quartz) 70.000 - 80.000 USD I could not believe it bu...

This $100K is nothing and fits the hype lifestyle....just imagine if I put $100K when Bitcoin was $4000 (or even less, $1) and its now $50000, I can imagine myself buying whatever grail watches that I cannot or never get and want to get, like a Grand Comp...

Well, mad as it is, I know someone who just paid close to this for a 5711

And he thinks it was a good buy since he didn’t have to buy a few other watches that he didn’t want and did not have to wait even if he had done that. I think it’s also these crazy bundling nonsense that makes many accept the idea of paying a premium. ...

It really is strange why anyone would pay this price.
