Why would 150 K 300K and even sometimes 1 million be more acceptable?
Honestly, give me 130k and let me choose between a just discontinued 5711 or a 50 year old vintage Daytona.... I’ll pick the nautilus in a heartbeat.
What I’m trying to say is we’re all a bit nuts to give that much for a watch.
And most of all let’s not forget there are still quite a lot of collectors like us with knowledge and passion who are looking for complications and finishing
But today the group that buys those hyped watches became much bigger..
And if they want a 139k 5711 they’ll buy it and if they want a 75k journe Quartz they’ll buy it.
They want THAT watch and not that Daytona from 1970 their parents or even grandparents wore.
5711 just sold for 137,000 USD.......how.....
Mind boggling. I don't understand it at all. ...
If all the grey market dealers currently in possession of a 5711 to sell...
collectively chipped in $500 to buy this at auction, they could now sell their 5711 and kill it. Now of course this did not happen but it’s not a bad idea!

Some guys buy a model in order to make a profit, solicit Instagramers to promote it, raise the odds artificially on Chrono24 by recording very high acquisition prices in the watch collection section thanks to fake accounts to artificially inflate the odds...
There a few hyped pieces and brands that are increasingly inaccessible to collectors.
But there is a tremendous selection across brands at great value if one is focused more on horological interest than hype, resale depreciation, etc.
A reflection of the utterly mad world we live in.
This is just another example of something making no logic or sense what so ever. The world has gone topsy-tervy as my gran would say. M.

Bruno I wholeheartedly agree and I’m not sure people really get this (or understand it). It’s fashion, having the “it” item, fear or missing out etc.
These prices, and prices for specific references with more intrinsic horological value too, are driven by said piece being the thing to have. RM’s entire resale market is driven by this. The 5711, 15202, Daytona etc markets are being driven by this. Journ...

It's called market. You don't understand it because *nobody* is able to understand it or predict it..otherwise, they would have bought all those SS watches that were sitting in the AD windows up until a few years ago, and would be pretty rich by now ;-)
That's one of the reasons why, here on WPS, we choose to focus on our passion for watches, rather than on their market/investment value ;-)
