Jaeger-LeCoultre

In truth, this model is rather anodyne

The 1958 Geophysic was an inspired clean-sheet design and perfectly proportioned for a 35mm watch. The new Geophysic True Second seems too large for its dial and case details. What seemed ideal in 35mm does not feel as warm or charming in 40mm - at least from my perspective. The three-hand watch category is a crowded one, and legendary name aside, the Geophysic True Second struggles to compete in this crowded class. For this style of watch, I believe that the black dial Master Control and the new sector dial Master Control offer stronger aesthetics than the Geophysic TS, and both are reasonably priced.

I would advise seeking a Geophysic Universal time in steel - pre-owned to match the price of the standard model - as the modern Geophysic to own. It's more handsome, original, and distinctive, plus you gain functionality. It's a good value new, but it's also so recent that even "used" examples can be found almost untouched for good value.

Best,
Tim
