You need to ask yourself

what are your priorities when buying a high end watch. For me if I had to rate my top five, it would be beauty of the dial, size (I have a small wrist so the case diameter and the lug length are crucial),quality of the finish (case, dial and movement), resale value (we say many watches are keepers when we buy them but could change our minds in the future), rarity ( I have a bad habit of focusing on rare things in life). All these contribute to the feel good factor of the purchase. I feel if you have an opportunity to buy a RW Smith, you should not miss it. This is not a hype watch. Yes it is not cheap but price is a relative thing and if someone told you that your Smith would probably sell for 40 or 50% upon your collection of the watch in 5 years time, the purchase price will seem less critical. Yes one may argue that you could buy a Voutilainen or Frodsham and have enough change to buy a Patek Annual Calendar. But for me, to own a RW Smith is the epitome of watch collecting. I would only opt for a Simplicity due to its reaale value (I am being honest here) and prefer a RW Smith as a watch to a Dufour. It is a different type of finishing and the ethos of both brands are quite different. I started communicating with Caroline Smith (Roger's wife who handles his communications) in 2010 and had a chance to meet Roger for a chat at Salon QP in November 2016 where I even asked him an impolite but necessary question of what would happen if he dropped dead before my watch could be delivered. He smiled and confidently replied that his ethos had been instilled on his small team who would continue his work to the high standard that he had set. I placed my order for a Series 2 shortly after meeting Roger and earlier this year just before the watch went into production, I changed my order to a Series 1 as I prefer the simplicity and the symmetry of the dal.. My watch will be delivered by May 2022, a long wait for many but I am waiting for a car which I will finally receive in 2028! smile Please bear in mind that Roger has only recently produced his 100th watch, that is not100 in one year or 100 Series 2s but 100 with his name since 2001. Lazy boy some may exclaim but this chap has been trying to perfect his work like no other and has not only improved Daniels co axial escapement but has also revised his case shape over the last few years. In addition, I understand his watches now require a service once every 15 years. That takes some beating if you ask me - it is a sign of a robust and reliable product which also happens to be exceedingly well made and rare. For me, a RW Smith is almost a priceless object. Thank you for reading.
