When we consider the parties who have stepped in to complete Derek's work - Kari Voutilainen, Frodsham and Josh Shapiro through the 'Pratt Watch' project - it's clear that his work is held in the highest regard by those in the know (I haven't read the new article in ACM yet but I'm certain that it will cast additional light on his legacy).
I raised Pratt in response to the OP only as an illustration and not to draw any direct comparisons, but I will now add this: Smith is a popular choice among many of today's wealthier collectors because of awareness, coverage and the prestige attached to his work. A Smith today is the ultimate showpiece in an age where quiet, private appreciation has been pushed aside by permanent social media exposure. Every industry needs its Steve Jobs who is lionised as a celebrity doyen. The plaudits are largely justified even if we can debate the value for money. Smith occupies that position today.
In contrast, Pratt's work - by his own hand and posthumously with the help of some of the industry's finest - is a path less trodden. It's a recondite choice for the reasons you mention. I doff my cap to those among us who choose that path. That this can be done for a fifth or a tenth of the price of a Smith is a secular good, too.
