Independents

You are a brave man!

I have never seen so many independent brands as there are currently in today's market which is great for collectors but not so good for the independents. For me, I am looking at the opportunity cost - what other watch I can buy for the same amount of money. In addition, resale value, the long term continuity of the brand, the after sales service all matter. Many might argue that the resale value is irrelevant if one plans to keep the watch but I would instead point them towards the excessive demand of the new Dufour Simplicity and on the end of the scale, any newly launched Ming watch.

A well hand finished movement and a beautiful movement design is always a plus too. Then there is the dial. For me a classic looking dial will always stand the test of time rather than one with a creative dial and case design.  Yes there is a demand for these creative designs but it is a niche market.  I would also go for exclusitivity and whether the brand can customise my timepiece.  Lastly and something the majority of collectors of independent watches are less concerned about but I am is the accuracy of a watch. I personally will never place beauty over accuracy especially when we are spoilt for choice with so many brands these days offering improved accuracy.  COSC accuracy for me is not good enough any longer, the game has moved on over the last decade. Nothing beats a reliable watch too. I once had the privilege of having lunch with Kari Voutilainen and I asked him what was his biggest headache and he replied having a watch returned to him with a problem.

All the best and I hope you live your passion and succeed!
