Hi Sham,
Yes, the independent scene is getting bigger. I respect your opinion in that at times it might be a bit much, but my anchoring point of view on this matter is this - considering how small our watch collecting world is, we need more creatives, more brands, and more offerings. Resale value is determined by the brand's success in terms of production output IMO (overall product is important too) but we've seen the failure effect of this by Panerai and Lange. Journe mastered this. I am actually in the prototyping phase and have outlined the partners I'll work with in Switzerland. IMO these people need to be celebrated. They're SO talented and they deserve acknowledgment. Because of my passion, I feel responsible in highlighting their talents.
COSC has lost its relevancy IMO. Independents create movements that go above and beyond BS marketing standards. Customization is a double-edged sword. Make custom pieces, attract customers in the short-term. Make custom pieces, lose brand identity/design language and there'll too many variants of a model out on market.
Reliability was top of mind for me; that's why I am working with Schwartz-Etienne. Outstanding movements, serviceability, and most of all, they care about our relationship. I suppose the industry will always have its qualms but IMO, if we are to celebrate this industry, grow it, and get watches on more wrists, we need to have a wide array of brands that offer value, design, reliability, and customer experience.
