Great response! So, I think we're in agreement in terms of the distinction between watchmaker and assembler. I'll tell you this - I have personally designed the aesthetic of the movements to be used in my watches. The coating, the finsihing, the font type, logo placement, customization of the barrel, etc. I am 100% in agreement re: support of the true watchmakers (Kikuno, Daniels, Journe, etc). They are the beacons by which we all are guided.
Actually, my entire wish list for watches I'd like to acquire are ALL independent brands - DeBethune, Akrivia, RW Smith to name a few. Outstanding brands and like you said, different niches.

For myself, I'm usually most interested in quality of finishing.
Brands like Kari Voutilainen and Romain Gauthier achieve a level of finish that the big brands generally can't produce.

Re marketing, yes this was true of some folks for a long time but it seems that worry might have been allayed in the last year as collectors and speculators are finding them.

The case idea is nice, it’s been done in similar ways by Ian Schon for several years for his dials and for the body of his pens. Some really interesting results.
I think he also experimented with cases, but I’m not sure if that resulted in an end product.
