...if and when the only intent is to provoke. I am reminded to some extent of the plague that was inflicted on my beloved San Francisco Opera several seasons ago with the arrival from Stuttgart of a new General Director whose goal was to "provoke and educate" the populace. What followed were five seasons of what in the Opera world is known as (sorry) "Eurotrash" -- black sets, with performers dressed in black trench coats, and staging consisting of a single red chair that would move from location to location -- with the intent of "challenging" the audience. We heard over and over again that "in Stuttgart, if they don't boo it isn't a success." My conclusion was that this was the unfortunate result of state funding of the arts, which led to the ability of spoiled brats to insult audiences with impunity.
I don't think that Beat is up to this (and certainly not Valentin!) but personally I have no interest in being talked down to by "artistes." I'll go with Beat as far as Schrodinger's still-audible ticking cat, but no further...
Best,
Gary
