For me it's all wrist time related.
Probably for all the reasons that you mentioned in your post.
The only reason for me to keep a watch that is not getting enough wrist time is because it has sentimental value and as a result it is impossible to part with.
One other reason that I have seen people let go of watches is because they are moving up scale in life and apparently once you have started buying more complicated watches it is difficult to turn back and the more simple wathces of one's collection simply have less appeal.

If it's not on your wrist, it's difficult to enjoy. If you're not enjoying it, it's that much harder to be in love with it. Classic pieces really last and stand the test of time. The trick is finding one that is a classic but fun piece.
