Bottom line, the wearer has to be in love with the watch long after the "hype" has dissipated. Watches that truly pass the test of time are not the ones that have short lived hype, but the ones with substance and style. "Fashions fade, style is eternal" a quote by Yves Saint Laurent really holds true in this regard.

If it's not on your wrist, it's difficult to enjoy. If you're not enjoying it, it's that much harder to be in love with it. Classic pieces really last and stand the test of time. The trick is finding one that is a classic but fun piece.
