Would it be possible for you to verify the flyback function for the 3rd edition? I ask this because while the chrono is in action, the bottom pusher feel as though there's an intentional mechanical block to stop it being pressed. This is the same as for my other mechanical chono watches (Speedmaster, Tag Monaco).
However, I agree from reading the Quill and Pad article you quoted that all JI editions have a flyback. What I don't know is whether this is a documentation issue or an issue with the watch. Unfortunately, I don't see any reviews online for this edition.
That being said, it's a 15 year old used watch. The flyback feature is something that I'll not use very often and I'm asking myself whether it's worth the cost of repair.
