Cost of Ownership
Apr 12, 2019,07:57 AM
A recent thread about the desirability of a BMW 840 or 850 Coupe reminded me of a project I worked on once ... True Cost of Ownership. This research effort was run by my friend Larry, who managed to collect fuel, financing, insurance, depreciation, services, etc and create a ballpark figure for running costs. This has been implemented by car buying site Edmunds dot com, in the US, as described below:
Ownership expenses are estimated for a five-year period
You will drive 15,000 miles per year
You are financing the vehicle using traditional financing, not lease financing
You have an above-average credit rating for the purpose of determining your finance rate
You are making a 10% down payment on the vehicle at purchase
Your loan term is 60 months
We calculate the five-year costs for the seven cost categories that make up the TCO® (depreciation, insurance, financing, taxes & fees, fuel, maintenance and repairs).
We also take into account any applicable federal tax credits.
The figures are adjusted for cost of living in your area, as shown by the ZIP code. If you live in Manhattan, or Beverly Hills, it might cost you a bit more...
Here are sample analyses of high-end cars:
Mercedes AMG S65
Range Rover SV Autobiography
BMW 760i
VOLVO XC90 WagonAnd finally, the car I bought (without looking at the figures, I must add)
Honda Ridgeline Pickup
It this analysis doesn't make you think twice, you are a braver man than I am.
