The quote is not scandalous, just a bit honest. We can assume Mr. Schmid is interpreting the data available to him and drawing from his own perspective in arriving at his view on collectors. Insatiability and a lack of contentment are characteristic of a driven person. Application pieces, forging boutique relationships and winning the competition amongst other clients to acquire the most in-demand pieces turns off some collectors, but it draws others in and the net is a positive to the bottom line.
Certainly some people gravitated towards Lange because they recognized the quality and it was a reprieve from the competitive approach that characterizes some higher volume prestige brands. The evolution of Lange is a realization that when we embrace a brand, we must recognize that our deep connection with the brand may change in the future, but we should never assume the worst. It also stands to reason that if a brand takes off and becomes the target of investors, we were just a bit early to the party and maybe we're ready to go home.
