Your neighbor reminds me of Uncle Steve . . .

. . . who was the consummate family man and took care of his cars as though they were almost as precious as his children. He was an auto upholsterer by trade - one of his jobs won the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in the early '80s. He owned a black supercharged '50 Mercury that he sold in order to garage the Cadillac he bought for his wife. To this day he regrets letting the Merc go, but would do the same regardless because it was more important that his wife's car be secure in the garage than owning a rare vintage.
In his nineties today; lives on his own in an immaculately maintained house he bought in the mid-'60s, with both daughters only a minute away in their separate homes.
Interestingly enough, just a few houses down from his place is a black MB 600 owned by the original purchaser.
"They don't make 'em like they used to" doesn't apply just to cars and watches . . . it applies increasingly to people, too.
