I have somewhat similar feelings about Rolex, but for a different reason...

Although I have a couple older Rolexes, they don't get much wrist time. In fact, I've bought, sold and traded more Rolexes than any other brand over the decades. I just don't ever seem to have a desire to hold onto them although I think they're great watches.
It's not that I'm concerned that others will judge me -- after all you're correct, it's probably the most recognized brand to the general public -- it's because I don't want to be wearing the same watch that everyone else wears, including non-watch people.
I prefer other brands and even then I prefer models that aren't often seen.
I chose a first-generation AP Millenary when I decided I needed an AP because even many AP fans are unfamiliar with the model, and just over a month ago my choice was a relatively unheard of model from Jaquet Droz even though any model within the brand is pretty much unknown in the real world.
So it's not that I care if others recognize my watch or not, it's more that I care that I know it's watch others won't often see.
