Agree & Disagree

I totally agree with you that perceptions matter. But let's take Padj's example above: I am sure the boyfriend's father may have noticed Padj's watch, whatever he decided to wear that day. Or maybe not, to a lot of folks a timepiece is no big deal. But he probably also noticed how Padj combs his hair, what Padj chose to wear and - much more importantly - what Padj said, how Padj interacted with his Padj's daughter, and what the boyfriend's father thought Padj thought of their kids together. So my point is there are a lot of factors that together make up a total assessment of an engagement together. What watch you wear is only one small part of that, in my opinion. And given the fact that they actually spent some significant time at a baseball game together minimizes it even further.
So I'm in the camp that says its okay to wear a Rolex to a baseball game or out with your daughter's boyfriend's father. But, on the flip side, I agree with you to not wear a gold Rolex to a client meeting. The reason for this is a bit more subtle - client's are paying our salary, and I don't want to ever give them the sense that their fees are financing our really nice stuff (even if there's an element of truth that they are).
Best,
