Perceptions matter. People do judge, as unfortunate as it is, based on these outward appearances. I would never show up to a client meeting, e.g., wearing a gold Rolex.
I think it’s wrong to dismiss the point, as some do. Those dismissive of the issue I’m sure dress a certain way, carry themselves a certain way, etc., implicitly conceding that perceptions do in fact matter.
I wear Rolex when the situation calls for it (tool watch), but otherwise eschew wearing them. They are just too ubiquitous around here. Still good, yes, but so damn common as to be obvious and somewhat boring. I try not to judge others who wear them, though, although when I see someone who has lots of Rolex and none others, I can’t help but wonder it the person actually likes watches or is really just into the symbols of luxury.
Oh, and I’m sitting in an airport, off to Kauai, wearing a sub on a nato strap.
Cheers,
John
