.....the Explorer II is a really lovely watch....unappreciated. I think there is a reason for why it is so neglected. Most of the other references that you mention have an historical "hero" that propels their popularity. For example, the Daytona has the Paul Newman in its heritage and this drives the demand and appreciation for the modern variant. Likewise, the James Bond Big Crown, the Patent Pending Double Red etc etc....these historical icons create a backdrop for the ongoing love of the current modern version.
But....the Explorer II just doesn't have that historical icon behind it. the most rare and iconic Explorer II is, I guess, the 1655.....and whilst its quite rare, its just not THAT rare or iconic....hence the heritage isn't in place to make the modern variant as popular. People want that history......
Instead, we have these modern Explorer II watches today which just don't get the love or attention that they deserve.......and that is a shame. Great to see you appreciate yours like this....really nice to see
