HK Oddity

May 31, 2018,20:01 PM

Hello all,

I live here in HK and have put my name down for the Pepsi and Rootbeer Rolesor and went to official ADs to do so.

The official retail price is 77.000 HK$ for the Pepsi in stainless steel. No one should pay more then that.

Please report this AD to Rolex. It's unacceptable. The head of service in HK at the service center is a friend of mine and I will raise this issue with him.

Lasty, for those who can't wait and have money to burn and don't care about the premium, please do NOT buy at a premium. It will only enable ADs to continue with their ripoff attitude.

Thank you!

Best
Andreas

No one can buy Rolex SRP in HK

 By: Watches4ever : May 31st, 2018-06:17
One AD called me this afternoon to offer me one of two 2018 Pepsi GMT on Jubilee bracelet arriving the next day, considering I am one of their VIP. After telling me the SRP, it will be sold with a 60% premium on top, he explained that's the market price a...

Is there an "A" in AD?

 By: JToddH : May 31st, 2018-06:27
Since when is an Authorized Dealer allowed to mark up a Rolex beyond MSRP? Hmmmmm.

The "S" in MSRP means "suggested"...

 By: datograph : June 1st, 2018-05:08
They can sell their stock at any price they want.

I believe you're incorrect.

 By: JToddH : June 1st, 2018-07:25
When I bought my Daytona, my AD told me they were only allowed to sell it at MSRP, and despite higher value on the secondary market, they were not allowed to attach a premium. Also, any AD caught by Rolex discounting is seriously punished. Years ago, my A...

We both are correct.

 By: datograph : June 1st, 2018-13:28
In some european countries at least, MSRP means what it stands for and retailers can charge under or above it. The other thing - you mentioned it - is, that manufacturers don't like it if you charge beyond or underneath it's suggested price, but that's an...

Done all the time

 By: watch-er : June 3rd, 2018-06:20
in the golf industry in the USA. The top brands can only be sold at a certain price, all the same, no matter where you buy them. A dealer who transgresses loses the account. Hard and tough with no exceptions, period.

While I cannot speak for other countries, this is how the U.S. Federal Trade Commission sees it ( From FTC's website):

 By: JToddH : June 3rd, 2018-07:31
Manufacturer-imposed Requirements Reasonable price, territory, and customer restrictions on dealers are legal. Manufacturer-imposed requirements can benefit consumers by increasing competition among different brands (interbrand competition) even while red...

Rolex demanding adherence to MSRP is NOT price fixing, nor is it illegal. They have EVERY right to demand consistent pricing of their products.

 By: JToddH : June 3rd, 2018-07:21
"Price fixing" is an agreement between competing brands. There is NOTHING wrong with a brand establishing prices and forcing dealers to stick to that pricing.

Some misunderstanding there... price fixing and fixed prices.

 By: datograph : June 3rd, 2018-13:41
Seems like different things. Fixed prices aren't allowed in Germany for example. A manufacturer can't force a retailer to sell at MSRP!

shud have gone ahead with the deal and reported the entire transaction to Rolex. You stood by your principle of ...

 By: redcorals : May 31st, 2018-06:35
...not giving in but sometimes condoning this business practice is worse. I share your disgust but I wud have outed them and then vented. You see 'you are a VIP anywhere you go' so why stand down and take this crap.

As far as I know...

 By: jayeyedoubleemmwhy : May 31st, 2018-06:43
ADs are required to sell watches at retail prices, maybe with a little discount, but certainly not higher. In the US, an AD can lose their Rolex account if they charge higher. Perhaps they’re trying to flip it as a “pre-owned, but new” watch to be able to...

Same in Germany. [nt]

Unethical and unfair to loyal customers and even new customers selling for over MSRP

 By: Watchlover78 : May 31st, 2018-07:25
Please report that to Rolex. Best regards, Baxter

I agree but you can only blame Rolex. Over the last 2 years all sports watches have been hard to obtain. Waiting lists 5 years plus.

 By: Mister M : May 31st, 2018-07:54
The AD knows what the market price is. So if they sell to you or I, we could flip the watch for a big profit. Unethical , but business is business. If the AD does not benefit, then the buyer could definitely.

Valid point but why not just raise the SRP to the market price so all this nonsense and alienation is removed. Let the money do the talking like PP did....

 By: redcorals : May 31st, 2018-08:12
....even if it sells for another 10k over the 20k mark. If buyers think the watch is worth 20k or 30k so be it but - at least the loyalists get a watch they want fair and square. Paying over the MSRP is considered cheating/scamming by any/all buyers. Not ...

Never pay over retail

 By: Brandon Skinner : May 31st, 2018-08:47
... end of the day, it's just a watch.

Well

 By: Seamaster2254 : May 31st, 2018-09:27
at the end of the day, this is just a Rolex with a pink and purple bezel. So keep your money in your wallet and keep looking out for another great watch. I will wait for your pictures with patience.

Who's to blame?

 By: VMM : May 31st, 2018-09:28
The one selling, or the one buying? In this sick society for quite some time now, price is set by the buyer, not the seller anymore. We lost our minds long time ago. If people is so wealthy and fool to pay over retail price, let's them have all the fun. I...

You did the right thing to decline the offer!

 By: sham1 : May 31st, 2018-10:24
This unfortunately is common practice in many countries in Asia and even the Rolex Boutiques practise selling certain watches above the RRP. I have no idea how they have managed to get away with it and I too wish that Rolex HQ would take action.

I feel for you, but would you really have a shot at the watch if the AD priced it at MSRP?

 By: vitalsigns : May 31st, 2018-11:49
That's the underlying premise of all those who object to premiums to MSRP: that if the AD would only price the watch at MSRP, the would-be buyer would be able to purchase the watch at MSRP. I think that's a false premise. The watch would undoubtedly be al...

I’m done with Rolex

 By: ripper444 : May 31st, 2018-18:53
If people just stopped buying these models for insane prices they would come back to reality and stop with the fake supply shortage nonsense. I’ll never buy another Rolex again.

Sadly this is common practice here

 By: kykw : May 31st, 2018-19:35
ADs even have the audacity to act as if they're doing you a massive favour by offering you one of these hot pieces at a massive premium. To them it's simply good commerce where supply way exceeds demand. I had an AD told me before that the premium was jus...

Just plain greedy

 By: Watches4ever : May 31st, 2018-19:48
AD receiving stock from Rolex, already at a dealer's discount so that they can sell at the SRP and profit on the margin. That's how I understand the trade. Discount is on the AD's discretion for loyal customers and Rolex HK recommended no more than 10% to...

dealer greedy yes.....but aren't we all??!!

 By: THH : June 1st, 2018-00:27
AD set the price at the price they want; whether you want to buy or not, its entirely up to you. in this case you declined, end of story. some will buy, some won't. if your AD gets 100 steel GMT in a month, you can get one at retail or with discount. do t...

Its only a Rolex Service Center

 By: Watches4ever : May 31st, 2018-22:23
They don't care how much customers pay for their brand, they only service them..

Rolex SA doesn't give a shit, pardon my language. In the internet age, the problem can be overcome easily.

 By: kesharoo : May 31st, 2018-20:50
I have advocated this sometime back to ensure a more equitable distribution of watches to enthusiasts but greed and market forces prevail. I am sure Rolex SA is aware but they couldn't care less. Most if not all they make sells anyway so why worry about t...

Sorry to hear this.

A friend ordered his in our the day after Baselworld. Because he was the first to ask AND having bought quite a few new Rolex over the past years he will get his this year (he hopes). That dealer in HK should be punished for his act. Filip

We are a small pepple on a sandy beach

 By: Watches4ever : May 31st, 2018-22:36
I was approached but turn down the offering, it will go to the next and the next who want a brand new piece to show off on IG/FB/Twitter by paying whatever is asked. Then there are the mainland Chinese scooping up what we don't want or refused to pay for ...

What some ADs do is pretty lousy...

 By: stevet : June 1st, 2018-15:55
I've heard of some selling for MSRP, but forcing you to buy another piece, too. I would never entertain such a practice. These ADs are the same guys who cry foul against gray market dealers. Such double standards!

That’s happening already back in 2015

 By: Greenwatch : June 3rd, 2018-04:07
In some watch shops when the BLNR was a hot item. Not surprising! In the past, one goes to HK to buy wristwatch for its availability and low price. Not anymore! How times have changed unfortunately. Marking up beyond SRP is the new norm for hot watches.

I know in the USA

 By: watch-er : June 3rd, 2018-06:26
ADs cannot sell new watches above the stated retail price. I understand it is and can be properly done in other world markets particularly in parts of Europe and the far east. Curious, though, why Rolex policies are not uniform throughout the world.

Total extortion!

 By: esddmd : June 3rd, 2018-13:21
Glad to see you declined!
