That's really a great way to approach things...

Some people give themselves all these rules. One person said all of his watches had to be either Titanium or platinum. He wanted to avoid gold. And he only wanted blue straps, and no automatic watches (only manual wind), historically correct sizes, and the most historically accurate watches. He was a great Purist, a true Purist, but giving yourself a set of rules does limit yourself. I bet, sometimes they regret not buying something because they hesitated because something didn't follow their rule; but later they decided they wanted it anyways, but by then it was sold out.
And there are some people who buy everything they like, setting almost no rules. Sometimes they buy something frivolously, and have their regrets later...
I'm kind of in the middle. I've got a lot of rules. But I break the rules too. In fact, the past few things I've acquired are so off the beaten path that the "rules" wouldn't even apply! It's just various approaches to collecting.
