Patek Philippe

Passing down a Patek... does it succeed?

Not every Patek owner has a successful, responsible son who loves high horology and is dreaming of the day that his Father will bequeath the family heirloom to him to cherish forever.  Never to leave the bloodline.  Through feast, famine, financial hardship.  The Patek would remain in the family as the true link from Father to Son and beyond.  That's a romantic notion and probably as likely as a world famous athlete having a son who also becomes a world famous athlete in the exact same sport.

But, how does it work when your son isn't financially responsible?  Or doesn't care about watches.  Or perhaps you have daughters.  Can any Patek enthusiasts share lessons learned in this extremely niche hobby of ours?  What happens when the highly responsible and financially disciplined father has taken great pains to keep a Patek for his son/daughter?  Does the process succeed?  Does it fail?  Please take a moment to share what you have observed in this wonderful community of ours.

Best,
Robert
