Something like this,
should fit ur criteria on daily beater (going shower, steam, sauna, sport etc) except for the "oh well here i come" criteria, but somehow i think it will still attract attentions, like i was experiencing thru all this time, but with different question " wow, is that a dive computer errr watch?" LOL.......
Somemore, as a daily beater, u can rely it on with its dual time function, stop-watch, temperature (when going inside sauna/steam) and also can measure the depth of the pool while swimming. For sure, I'm the witness for its reliability against salt water, water pressure, even bumps and knocks with other scuba gears.
To sum up, u wont get worried if u have to wear it as beater while travelling with this kind of transportation 
IMHO, I just cannot imagine if have to torture a 5980 to something that it's not being built for....It will break my heart

I am an owner of a 5980/1a and I have to agree with Zorro on all points. The way you intend to wear the watch will likely scratch up the bezel alot.
The bezel of a Dayto is a pure scratch magnet, too.
