Hi there,
I think the 5980 is a fine choice for what you're looking for but you might want to consider a few other options as well:
1. From what you've described it seemed to me that an AP ROO might be a better choice. It seems more in line and appropriate (certainly visually) with some of the rough treatment you describe and is also quite a step above many sport watches. AP similarly sends the "arrived" message and the cost is accordingly higher than many other brands.
2. Although the 5980 is a sport model, I think it is a bit too elegant (potentially to the point of awkwardness if recognized) for the gym and/or steam room in my opinion. I think it is more at home on the track or on a boat or perhaps a casual wearer, but not really a gym or steam-room type of watch.
3. I would encourage you to check out some of the posts on ISO metrics for waterproofing - 120m is probably good enough but the depth gauge metric and the actual meaning of the standard are different and so worth some research if you go ahead with the 5980.
All that said, it is nevertheless a steel sports watch and will probably manage the abuse you're describing, but at this price level, why not get one and treat it a bit better? Good luck in your search.
