An everyday watch?
If you really want a watch for your daily wear for "the gym, steam room, shower, and be able to wear it 24/7 if I choose to," and want to get some attention, may I NOT suggest a Patek and instead, turn your attention to the Purists ABR. If you want something that will get people's attention, is customized, in limited production, has a workhorse caliber and is not available in any boutique no matter how much money you have, the ABR with its red strap will surely turn heads. It can withstand all of your objectives, even if you bash it against a table.

I am an owner of a 5980/1a and I have to agree with Zorro on all points. The way you intend to wear the watch will likely scratch up the bezel alot.
