Hi D10, personally, Patek is all about having never left in the first place :)
imVho, you'll probably get more oohs and ahs with an IWC or a Panerai (at least from where I come from) ... that people who think they're in the "know" think that you might actually be in the "know" or tell people that you are "into" watches.
Rolex... for the great majority, works all the time. But not as some passport to a VIP club. More like having ABS as standard equipment in cars... great for big family reunions to show them that this little boy has arrived :p
All depends on the context.
Strangely enough, the more I think about it and the more I get immersed in Rolex, I find it that wearing one can the most under the radar thing that you can do.
As a "rich" friend told me, the one with the least but is the happiest wins 
No right and wrong for "arriving".

I am an owner of a 5980/1a and I have to agree with Zorro on all points. The way you intend to wear the watch will likely scratch up the bezel alot.
The bezel of a Dayto is a pure scratch magnet, too.
