I have been wearing a 5980 daily for a while now and it has held up just as well as any other watch.
I think that many have the idea that Patek calibers are more delicate than others simply because they are so finely made. Though I do agree that the grand complications, and some the ultra thin movements might sacrifice durability for slenderness I really dont see that being the case with the caliber in the 5980.
The way I look at it you can wear any watch on a daily basis is you use your head little bit and consider your lifestyle. Is wearing a 5980 in a steam room occasionally really that bad ? Wouldn't wearing a watch in the tropics with high heat a humidity be just as bad ? I've never hear anyone say that you shouldn't wear a mechanical watch in the tropics....
What about wearing watch to the gym ? The worst that could happen would be you scratch or ding it while handling weights, or over wind it while on the treadmill, any other mechanical watch would be put through the same and I dont think a Rolex is designed to take this any better than a Patek, Rolex's steel scratches and dings just like Pateks, and Pateks can be refinished just like Rolex. So from a durability stand point I see nothing wrong with wearing a 5980 daily.
I do partially agree with others that the 5980 doesn't really say "I have arrived" , but then again what does anymore ? Rolex is so common most wont even pay attention, and many will think its an invicta or some other brand copying a classic Rolex design (look at how many watches look like a DJ, DD, Sub, or Daytona) Instead I would say maybe an AP RO or ROO would a better job of sending that message. AP has increased in popularity and many know that it is step above Rolex and the design is unmistakable. Unless your usually around other watch aficionados most simply wont pay attention to a 5980, or if they notice it, they wont really know what it is. This is a plus to some, a negative to others depending on what kind of message you want to send. As others have said much of the allure of Patek to me is the fact that it goes unnoticed and I like it that way.
