I understand there is a great debate between the 5970 vs 5270, this is my take......
Fact 1: I'm spending serious money, no doubt about it.
Fact 2: I'm paying a ridiculous premium for the Patek brand because the perception is Patek is the best.
Fact 3: The 5970 is a Lemania-based chronograph movement, which is very well respected, but not designed by Patek.
I am not one to succumb to hype and marketing. In my humble opinion, I expect uncompromising quality from a brand that claims to be the best. I buy John Lobb shoes or Silver Lining furniture because they are hand crafted by in-house artisans. If I wanted a movement from a 3rd party supplier, I'd buy an inferior brand. To buy a "grand complication" that is not actually fully designed by Patek, is like buying a Rolls Royce with a V12 BMW engine. It upsets me, I would look at it everyday and feel betrayed, feel lied to, feel like I've let myself down. The 5270 movement is Patek, love or loath it, it's Patek, eventually logic will prevail and collectors will appreciate that Patek was feeling the heat from its competitors and realised they need to up their game with the 5270.
