Panerai 662: A no holds barred review

Oct 09, 2016,14:33 PM

If there ever was a reference so revered that it takes on almost a devine presence it is 6154- aka The Small Egyptian

Most admirers and even non admirers of Panerai have longed for Panerai to produce a homage piece to honour thus devine reference.

So when Panerai announced just such a piece, without hesitation I placed an order. I have to admit that when I saw the oress release instead of joy I felt hesitation. Why? Well fir me the 6154 should not be a re-dial of the 587, which to be fair was an excellent rendition of the 6152/1.

The 662 in the first impressions was a re-dial and movement re-finished of the 587.

For me, the 662 needed to be thinner like the 514/622.
Secondly it needed a thick silid screw back. Finally a rich brown dial or ochre dial.

It did not look good. But deposit was paid, I did think of pulling out but I didn't want to take a risk in case it was better in the flesh. Besides I probably could get most if not all my money back if I really didn't like it.

Then 10 days ago I got the call- it had arrived.

My initial thoughts
Dial- ok, neither like or dislike
Case- too thick for a 6154

Case back: needs to solid and thicker

But it wasn't bad enough not to warrant some wrist time: I was so desperate for the 6154, and if this is what was  Panerai's best effort, then so be it, I will give it a try.

After 10 days this is what happened-

The dial colour is beautiful- it grows on you, changing from almost chocolate to grey brown depending on the prevailing light condition

The case: yes too thick to be a true 6154 homage but perfect for this watch

Case back: cant see it anyway

So what changed?
I don't see this as a 6154 anymore: forget the press release. What this is , is a beautiful modern Panerai with Vintage DNA. It fits the mode of previous classics like the 249 , 232 and 372.

If you accept its failings as a homage but accept it as a modern interpretation: then it wins. It gas now become one of my all time favourite watches, probably the first Panerai that will be a permanent member of my collection.

The 6152/1 and 6154 though similar were very different as can be seen here courtesy of Paneraiblog:

You can see the difference in thickness

Here are more 6152/1 courtesy of Christies Sotheby's and our own Nico

The 6154 is in many ways are more "elegant " rendition
Here is Nico doing some modelling

But ultimately the 662 had to be seen in its own merit, and  for me atleast, it fulfills s longing for a 6154 inspired Panerai

Best
Imran

or tributes and re editions for that matter. Thanks for the review Imran. A beautiful keeper no doubt.. do you also have the 587? Your thoughts on the 587 from a 662 perspective? Best, Echi

587 is same but different dial

Like owning a black and white Daytona I missed out on the 587, so its a question of which one you prefer

I was very impatient to read your thoughts on this 662.

I think that you, Sergio and me are speaking the same language when it comes to the 6154. The language of passion and madness for the 6154. So, when the 662 came out, I was waiting for some thoughts from people who are big fans of the 6154. By the way, I ...

The irony is that the 399 had a slimmer case

So why they made this thicker and called it Small Egyptian is a mystery But does this mean that is the end of the line for a base 1940 Or will they introduce yet another 1940 base with a thinner case Maybe like the 372 in regular production? Here courtesy...

It has been my opinion...

forever that the 6154 should be..left alone..and not "hommaged" by Panerai. The uniqueness of the dial, alone, makes it impossible to emulate anyway. Still and all, as you wrote, in its own right I find the 662 a rather handsome modern Panerai, deeply "co...

I find the 662 to be a wonderful modern interpretation with lots of Panerai DNA...

That said, I am very interested to see what is released for the Richemont 20th Anniversary in 2017. Maybe a sandwich brown dial in 622 case that will be a tribute to the 6154? Who knows, but many Paneristi's are very excited to find out! Chuck A

would be on my p.o. view a shame if they

would introduce next year a new re-edition of a 6154 which is thinner and closer to it. I would consider as a pretty unprofessional and i would be really upset about it. Even though it would not chance my opinion about the 662 which is just a great and un...
