...and at the risk of over-simplfying other posters' points, I think some posters are missing the point when they focus too much on the "marketing" and "market" as the sole price determinating factor. To be honest, I am not a fan of any of the watches at issue, but am somewhat disturbed when people discuss the watches and their relative merits without a complete understanding of the relative costs and !man-hours that do into each watch. In that sense, despite the obvious similarities on a superficial level, the watches are completely different in their design/manufacturing approach (as already clearly explained by other posters).
In short, I am baffled by the posting about "it must be marketing" - does anyone here actually think that Roger Smith spends three times on marketing as FP Journe? By the same token, since a Roger Smith with power reserve costs about 35X more than a omega with power reserve, does that mean that the cost can be simply dismissed by saying that Roger spends 35X more on marketing than a marketing powerhouse like Omega/Swatch??? I am not in line for a Series 2, but perhaps one could meet and speak to Roger (or visit his workshiop) before making these broad generlizations.
Also confused by the "multi-national corporations determine pricing based on supply-demand models, etc. so Smith and Dufour must do the same" argument. Why is a two or three person watch shop going to do pricing or anything the same way as a multi-national corporation with dozens of MBAs running complex financial/pricing models? My 60-year old tailor from Napoli spends about 70 hours on a suit (and his wife does the trousers) but he charges many times more than an Armani pre-made suit glued together in a factory in China. Is it marketing, or is it "supply and demand"??? Last time I checked, my tailor wasn't in the same tax bracket as Mr. Armani and I haven't seen him in Vogue magazine in this or any other century so his marketing machine must be malfunctioning.
I'm too tired and frustrated to be explained my points in a more articulate manner, but I hope I made some sense.
