Guys opinion needed
Been looking into independent for a few months, and recently met a top collector in person. He made some suggestions so I have narrowed down my list (he was telling me to start from GPHG list)
1. Urban Jurgensen - P8 movement
2. kari voutilainen vingt 8
3. fp journe chronometre optimum
UJ -
Pros: done a bit search, the P8 movement is very impressive, the very first pivoted detent escapement on a wrist watch (didn’t know Kari also assisted in developing P8 prototype too).
Love the teardrop lugs and Arabic numeral dial.
Cons: BUT from what I can see on the website, P8 movement is not available on the dial I want.
Kari Vingt 8,
Pros: one of the best watchmakers in today’s watch world. And I only realised that Vingt 8 is possible for own customisation! I haven’t done much research on the movement or anything yet. Again, teardrop lugs.
Cons: I think it’s probably the most expensive one.
FPJ Optimum:
Pros: I was looking at CB and CS, but I just feel it’s like Rolex hype. I have 3 or 4 friends with CB already (sorry I like this exclusivity and uniqueness, which is why I am looking at an independent brand). Can’t get a brand new one, and a used one is trading above retail price.
I like the power reserve on Optimum and deadbeat second is just great!
And it’s available from my local AD.
Cons: I think price is similar to Kari Vingt 8 but can’t customise.
What do u guys think?
In fact I am in no hurry to purchase one.. Don’t mind the wait, a friend of mine apparently has to wait til 2025 to pick up his Roger Smith watch.

I don't think there's an agreed upon ranking
And any ranking would be highly subjective depending on what you choose to prioritize. That being said, I think there's a consensus that the current "holy trinity" of traditional watchmaking consists of Philippe Dufour, Kari Voutilainen, and Roger Smith. ...
I agree with the top three being R. Smith, Dufour and Daniels. After that, it becomes interesting! I do wonder though should Voutilainen be there?
To me, if Journe is in the top 5, I could make a valid argument to include Voutilainen. Although, I like Rexhep I think he needs to produce a bit more; however, I am confident he will take his place in the top 5 in due time. Just my thoughts!

But Voutilainen doesn't make their own movements or parts? I only heard they are famous for dials.
Kari makes most of the parts for the movement in his workshop....

As others have said it's highly subjective based on what one wants from the watchmaker/ brand.
In your definition of "top notch" I think you should be thinking about "and or" versus solely "and" in many cases as while it could be argued that some indies bring to the table "superb finishing" and "a reputation for remarkable timepieces" some clearly ...
Well, I think once we come to an easy consensus on the top five musicians of all time, then we can do the top 5 independent watch brands.
Obviously, the top three are Bach, Miyan Tansen, and Vilayat Khan, but after that it gets tricky...

I would say that independent should mean vertical integration of production
So, cross most of the names off your list! I'm glad you mentioned Ochs und Junior, though, they deserve to be in the conversation about independents.

Yes they are
But they are still large watch brands that churns out tens of thousands ( in Rolex case, nearly a million ) watches a year.
i don't think it matters...independents has a common behaviour...
they produce watches they think is the correct one, they don't listen/respond to market needs in general. Rolex & PP does it - they always launch something that leaves the market to look forward to 'what next' Best, mahesh.,
For me it would be very hard to choose a top five of Indie brands .
Your five brands are for sure one of the best but like others mentioned Kari V , Vianney H , H Moser , DeBethune , Urwerk , MB&F , Roger W S. And some more are amazing brands too , its all what you like and what your feeling is with a brand imho

GF are without a doubt in the league of their own for finishing and technology.
But, they are not indie 😀 They are trailblazers, industry leaders, horological wizards, cutting edge and important BUT at least 20% of their company is owned by AP. So, i don’t think they quite qualify as indie. But they are indisputably awesome!

FPJ has also sold 20% of his stock to Chanel . Still a indie brand imho . 20% isnt going to give you the power of the company to tell them which way to go i think . its Just a financial injection imo and a collab for there knowledge and knowhow

Harv not played in this game but as an enthusiastic supporter of the independents I would suggest that of your 3 choices I would choose an UJ only if it is an early one that was designed by Pratt. That was a truly special time for that brand. Otherwise
