Horological Meandering

Oh, how long have you got?!?!?!...

It would take ages to type a comprehensive catalogue in reply to your seemingly simple question.

Bernard, Clang, TM, Cen, Alex and others pointed the way to 'Independent' thinking (and there's now one or two of those in the watchbox); Lord Arran directed a peek at IWC (although there is no Il Destriero Scafusia in the watchbox, there's a couple of IWC); Art's quiet but persistent affection for vintage Omega was an eye-opener; SteveG is single-handedly responsible for first looks into a whole range of pieces subsequently acquired and, as the proud custodian of a couple of GaryG's cast-offs, there is now an excruciating wait ahead until he next lets go of any one of the marquee pieces in his collection.

You did your bit as well, Andrew, as we shared a 'Journey' together. Who, though, has been the most Devilish influence? Doubtless there will be many who proclaim -

So much for freewill!

It is also humbling to think that the influences might go both ways. Of course, anyone who says there should be one Speedy in every collection should put his money where his mouth is:

Any false starts? Yes - despite being able to intellectualise their appeal, despite having read reams and reams of positive reviews, still the ‘porthole’ style of watch (Nautilus, RO, ROO, Hublot) does not call out from a personal perspective.

Any regrets? Yes - not having listened to all those who said that waiting to acquire one sensational piece is ultimately more rewarding than haphazardly accumulating lesser pieces on an ad hoc basis to fuel instant gratification; not learning, sooner, to give proper consideration to the movement of a watch, whether it be a humble tractor or a handmade thing of great complexity; not paying attention to the wails of despair from those bankrupted by Amanico's reviews.

Yet another compelling thread Andrew: thank you. The answers to follow will be most interesting.

Cheers,

pplater.
