In truth I’m not sure there are consensus answers on any of your questions.

A collector’s motivation can be pure passion or pure economics, we see this at all levels. It can also lie somewhere in between. For sure there are infinitely more collectors with a bias towards the monetary aspect in the last several years and I feel many of these folks are here temporarily while the economics make sense.
What should a collection look like? Again, no consensus answer but to me I always think of those that have some theme or focus as closer to the collector ideal. I don’t think it needs to be a entire collection solely focused on a single theme, but I do admit I admire those collectors. One could have a some parts of their collection focused on a specific brand, type of watch, compilation, production era and so on. For me for example I have a one subset of my collection focused on vintage Grand Seiko and Seiko. There’s a reason behind this outside of the watches themselves which give them a little more meaning.
Your last question I think is an impossible one; I’ve been collecting from the same age and it’s a constant evolution. It took many many years to really establish what was right for me, that only happened through lots and lots of exposure. I think for many people until one gets to some level of saturation it’s pretty hard to have a settled collection.
Just my thoughts. I expect a lot of differing views.
