I would also be interested
to see what drives this perception as I have wondered about it myself.
I wonder whether it has to do something with the parent Swatch that creates a negative correlation. Would the brand fair better under Richemont? Then again, Bentley or Bugatti don't suffer from VW ownership
Breguet also has a very specific design language that might not appeal to all - especially the engraved dials and case sizes are contrary to current trends and perhaps that plays a role too.
I do believe that there is plenty of work for Breguet's marketing department to do in terms of establishing the brand in the top tier - although Swatch clearly seem to think that Breguet holds the top position - from the Swatch Group website:
"Since it was acquired by the Swatch Group in 1999, Montres Breguet has rapidly moved into the world number one position in luxury watchmaking."
Thankfully the Breguet website doesn't blow its trumpet quite so loudly. It is interesting to note however, that the Breguet site states that Breguet has applied for more patents in the past 8 years than during the years of its founder - not sure if that's the result of the modern legal environment or a wave of research activity.
Recent purchases of historic Breguet watches by the company seem to indicate a drive by the marketing department to polish up the heritage aspect. Look at Panerai - they were nowhere until a bit of unexpected marketing exposure escalated their position in the industry.
In the end, purchase the watch that speaks to you - if it's a Breguet then at least you know that not everybody at the conference table will be wearing the same watch
