For me personally...
...I almost always prefer a transparent caseback. For example, my Seiko 5 has a true workhorse movement with "toolwatch" finishing, but I still enjoy looking at it. I simply love to see the gears and screws and mechanics at work! I enjoyed the view though the sapphire on the Full Calendar, but I can certainly see your point of view also!
