I have to weigh in on this one . . .
. . . as I have had more than ten p-cars. The 964 is fantastic for many reasons, not least of which that it is air-cooled. To suggest a water-cooled Porsche like the 997 is to suggest going to an entirely different category -- you might as well suggest a BMW 8 series! I would add, that looking for a "more powerful car" is all about a story you can tell -- in the real world, you can not really utilize more than 6/10 of these later cars unless you track them. The 964 will still give a great "sports car" experience -- I am a firm believer in the tried and true adage "better to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow".
I would add that, as far as styling and "purist" concerns, the hard top on the 964 and 993 is the one to get! Top-down on these references is not a good look -- and stiffness/performance suffers.

The 911 is a classic worthy to be called "icon".
From a pure design-perspective the 964 is beautiful. And the RS version is a true dream-car.

I had a 964 as well
but I prefer the 993 in terms of look and feel. especially since it is more agile on the road than the 964
already too perfect in a certain sense

I too love the coupes.
But I think with the older ones I do feel the allure of going the cabriolet route. Top down, wind in your hair, driving along the coast. Feels like heaven I guess that’s what Amanico’s thinking. 964 is really sexy….wish I could get one. Best Gatsby
