Dato Comparo Poll
Put me down in favor of the first gen version. In fact, I waited to acquire the Pt version (I already had RG) until I saw the 2nd gen and then decided to buy a preowned original version. Particular considerations for me was my preference for the dial of the original (including use of Romans, I preferred without power reserve aesthetically, did not like the addition of red, etc.) and I preferred somewhat smaller size of the first gen version.

First is and always will be the first love! Because of everything: size, proportions and I like even the roman numerals here… And the ugly “Auf & Ab” ruins totally the second generation… Just my 50 cents!
I like the power reserve
and prefer stick markers to Roman numerals, so my choice is made.

Aaaah, good discussion to have. Aesthetically, I prefer the 1st generation. The original design is hard to beat, in my opinion, while the power reserve indicator on the 2d generation kills the original design, for me at least.

I’ve heard others say the gen 1 was preferred because it was more open and the gen 2 was cluttered by the PR. All of this is so subjective!! Isn’t that interesting??
For sure....so very subjective. The PR as a dial element doesn't bother me (nor its placement)...
although for a classically designed chrono, i would have preferred it somewhat different, probably similar to the PR on the double split
15-1 and for me it's not a single reason like the power reserve or the size. I tried the new Dato on and nothing happened. There were no emotions at all. No idea why.
With the old Dato it's vice versa. It's my grail and will always be

First generation for me. Second has too much open space. On power reserve, I don’t see the purpose on manual winding watches. Much prefer this feature on low efficient/micro rotor ones.

Ok, I will try to answer to that one. First, that changes a lot of things, because: 1/ You have no comparison points, if there wasn't a first Datograph. 2/ You wouldn't have to compare the " 2 " with an Icon. 3/ You wouldn't be disturbed by the comparison...

The 2nd generation is a gorgeous timepiece, but there's nothing like the 1st generation Datograph. The various elements just works perfectly.

Original too small for me and can’t stand Roman numerals on a chronograph. So when the Ab/Auf came out, I knew I had to have it. It will never leave my stable.
