A. Lange & Söhne

Oh no, very sorry to hear this.

I suspected that at least part of the high cost may be due to prior work performed by a non-Lange watchmaker. Lange's repair quotes always increase if they detect evidence of this. And of course, it can be harder to sell such a watch if left unrepaired because a buyer would need to put that much (more) money into it after purchase in order to get Lange to ever service it.

Will you keep the watch and just have a good non-Lange watchmaker try to fix the date window misalignment? That's what I might do.

I remain curious about three of the items deemed necessary: replacing the hands, bezel, and wheel bridge (total cost 3470 Euro). I wonder how the movement's functionality or reliability would be compromised if any of these items were not replaced. For example, are the hands are bent or the holes enlarged? Would the integrity of the case or its water resistance be compromised if the bezel wasn't replaced? And if the wheel bridge is a fixed part, exactly what about it requires replacement? I would think and hope that all "necessary" repairs involve functionality, and all "optional" repairs are purely cosmetic.

I also wonder what other non-Richemont brands on a similar tier (such as AP or PP) do in these same situations, when they receive watches that they can see were previously serviced by watchmakers outside their network. I am curious if they handle it the same way or differently.

Again, I am very sorry to hear about this.
