my service experience, original owner, no 3P attempted service
I brought in a watch recently to be serviced. Original owner, first time serviced after ~10 years. The quote came in above the website estimate (tier 1) citing parts wear etc. I was a bit surprised given that it does not get a lot of wear in the rotation but my sense is regardless of whether you (a) give them the benefit of the doubt--even if the watch is working fine, over time parts will degrade in ways imperceptible to us but not to their experts or (b) cynically assume that they look at when the watch was last serviced and 'gross up' the cost of the service to reflect time beyond the recommended service interval irrespective of actual underlying wear or need i sort of have reached the same conclusion either way.
If you 'stretch' your service well beyond the recommended interval, i would expect that your actual cost will roughly track the length of time between service vs. recommended service interval
if you are servicing at the recommended interval, i would be very surprised if service estimates deviate from what is on the website (assume normal wear etc.)
I would HIGHLY recommend though that you review the actual quote. I had originally communicated i did not want any superficial work done (polishing etc.) when i dropped the watch off but it looks like it was done anyways--i did just ok'd the number they received from Lange service HQ.
Bummer that the OP had to go through that experience; but somewhat consistent with other stories i've heard about second-hand purchases being met with lofty folow up service costs. I suspect that the subsequent owner will have an equally unpleasant surprise when they attempt to service. and thus the wheel keeps spinning.
tl;dr: if you are an original owner of a lange and have internally budgeted that you will spend $[standard service cost] every 4-5 years. i don't think you should be strongly dissuaded from owning based on servicing risk.
